About Ben Alcala

Benito Alcala, Jr. has over 15 years of Information Technology experience, working with both server and desktop hardware and software.

Ben previously worked for Rackspace Hosting, a leading Internet and Cloud hosting company. As a Linux Administrator he assisted Rackspace customers with technical issues with their Linux servers and applications. This made Ben highly expert with many of the Open Source Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP applications that power much of the Internet.

More recently he has worked in Rackspace's internal Open Cloud operations team where he helped administer a range of Open Cloud systems, from basic infrastructure to some of the products Rackspace offers to its customers. In this position Ben has become familiar with a whole range of additional Open Source technologies like Python, PostgreSQL, and Tomcat.

Ben also worked for Texas A&M University - Kingsville administering the University's WebCT learning management system and the University's Distance Learning help desk. In that role he assisted hundreds of instructors and thousands of students with WebCT problems every semester. While at TAMUK he also did multimedia production, streaming University events like Graduation on the Internet.

Ben's Information Technology education includes two Associates degrees earned at Houston Community College:

  • A.A.S. Oracle Database Administration
  • A.A.S. Unix Operating System

While at Houston Community College Ben also earned seven Certificates in Computer Science Technology:

Ben is currently attending Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio where he is on track to compete the degree requirements for a B.S. degree in Computer Information Systems and Security sometime soon.
